Arviat is going green with a community composting project that aims to get our over abundance of polar bears out of our dump and community. We want to take organic waste out of the dump. The project has two components—to remove compostable organic waste such as vegetable matter and use it to produce soil through compost barrels and worm farms. We also hope to remove animal waste and especially the refuse from fast food outlets which are the key sources of attraction for polar bears.
The composting project has the beneficial by-product of nutrient rich soil. We will be using this soil in the community greenhouse project. We hope to produce food for our community to support better health. Click here to see what this can look like.
